Freestyle Motocross

Had a chance to shoot my first freestyle motocross event. It was a little show put on by Zimmer Autosports here in Kamloops.
The wind was blowing hard and most of the shows were canceled this one was only about 20 minutes but I still managed a few shots that I'm happy with. It was a good time.

Longing to return

Dec242010_qci_0445

I miss the islands. A couple nights ago I started looking at some hot vacation spots for over the xmas holidays and kept returning to the flight's into sandspit.
I love the Queen Charlotte Islands and want to go back for a bit. I was just watching some deer out my back yard and was thinking of the good times I had there last winter and summer and want to go soon. It's not just a want but an actually longing. It' kind of weird the feeling. It's an amazing area. that feels so right to be at. I love the solitude.

I was pretty excited to have a few of my photos featured in a magzine this past month. I've had a few shots here and there but never a two page spread. I'm stoked about it.

Yuk - Long Weekends in Southern BC make for LONG weekends

I'd forgotten how much disdain I had for long weekend travel. When we lived up north the roads were busier for sure you'd see like 15 vehicles every 100 kilometers. Not so in Southern BC. It was pretty much bumper to bumper the whole weekend.
We hardly seen any wildlife in our extensive travels through the national parks.

We left Saturday and traveled to Golden. There we went up the Kicking Horse mountain with their gondola and did a bit of walking around on top of the world. The sights were amazing and I would say do it for sure if you have a couple hours to kill.

Sunday we drove to Radium through Kottenay Park into Banff and Banff National Park then Back to Golden through Yoho National park.

Monday we came home through Yoho Park again then onto Jasper National Park to Kamloops. It was a ton of driving that should have netted us hundreds of photos of wildlife. It didn't though. We only seen countless deer, a moose, an elk, and one tiny herd of big horn sheep. Pretty disappointed I was. The crazy traffic just added to my frustration. Next time I'll skip the long weekend and stick to early spring and fall trips for wildlife viewing.

Here's a few of the shots I did take.

An en-lightning Experience

I finally had a chance to shoot some lightning. I've been waiting for a couple years. The first time trying was in Alberta two years ago but I never got one shot proper. Tonight was the first time since then that I had a good storm roll over top of us. I'm not sure how long it lasted. We missed the really exciting flashes but still ended up with a few cool shots. I couldn't make up my mind which one I like the most but am leaning in favour of the black and white shot.

What's your favourite, please let me know.

A day at the races

I had the chance today to go to the Kamloops Off Road Races (K.O.R.R) today. What a blast.

The city editor of the Kamloops Daily News, Tracy Gilchrist, was able to to arrange for me to shoot the race. It was awesome the organizers threw a hi-vis vest on me and let me wander around the track and shoot from wherever I wanted. It was great, I'm filthy and covered in dirt but it was a blast. Next races are September 11 and Oct. 2. I'm hoping that even if I'm not shooting for the paper I'll be able to get on the track because it made for awesome shots.

I was only able to stick around for the first couple races as I had the meeting at 2:30 and they started late so next time I'll have to organize different.

Lots of new things to photograph

Well we moved to the Kamloops Region in a town called Pritchard last week. So far its been pretty good.

We have a ton of wildlife in the area. There's an owl just down the road a bit so you'll see lots of owl pictures or as long as he stays around.

The park down on the river in Kamloops has a few ducks and geese that are pretty tame so we were able to get a few nice shots of the Malards. I took a few shots on lunch last week of the little goslings they were close enough you could tell what they were on my cell camera.

We went for a drive for a couple hours yesterday afternoon and I managed to get my first shots of a Northern Goshawk not great but thought I'd post them as well. There's also this little orange headed bird that we haven't been able to identify yet. It has the strangest almost electric sounding call.

The horses were in one of the flooded fields near Falkland. There's a lot of water flowing through the valleys right now.

I'm not the only one leaving town

This is the last group photo of full crew on the CCGC Point Henry.
This fine boat is set for retirement in the next few months and Chief Engineer Bruce Dockerty, CD is going into retirement before then.
This hard working crew has been helping keep our waters safe and saving lives on our coastal waters for a great many years.
Thanks guys for keeping us safe all this time and sharing coffee with me over the past five years.
